What image comes to mind when you think of robots? Do you think of military or medical devices? Do you think of crafty androids from the movie and TV series Blade Runner? Or do you think of capricious droids from Star Wars? The reality is that the vast majority of the robots we see are man-made: they are the factory robots you use in your workplace, the dealer service robots from the car parts factory, and the slow-moving workforce augmentation robots that pick parts from conveyor belts. Such man-made robots and similar robotic devices envisioned in science fiction might someday be commonplace, but in the near term, we are far separated from the ability to build and control robots with intelligence. The technology to build intelligent robots is nowhere on the horizon. But that’s no reason to get discouraged. On the contrary, it should motivate us to make the technology a reality, both for the product and for the user.
This book is designed to take you on a whirlwind tour of some of the important technologies that will be important as we build intelligent robots. It is not intended as a comprehensive introduction to robotics as a discipline. Indeed, the reader may find that some of the topics discussed are already familiar, as they have been covered in previous robotics books.
In the introduction, we will provide a progress report on the state of robotics. We will describe some of the constraints faced by a new technology and suggest what technology changes in particular will be crucial to creating the next generation of intelligent robots. 7211a4ac4a
